Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women's cooperatives have been recognized as a powerful tool for promoting rural development by providing women with opportunities to engage in collective economic activities, access financial resources, and improve their livelihoods. In Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, women’s cooperatives play a crucial role in empowering rural women, especially in agriculture and small-scale enterprises. These cooperatives provide women with a platform for pooling resources, sharing knowledge, and accessing credit facilities, which are often inaccessible to individual women due to social and financial barriers (Aliyu & Zubairu, 2023).
The role of women’s cooperatives in rural development is multifaceted, encompassing improvements in income generation, skills acquisition, and social cohesion. In Kachia, women’s participation in cooperatives has contributed to increased agricultural productivity, enhanced access to markets, and improved community welfare (Abubakar & Dada, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the impact of women’s cooperatives on rural development in Kachia, focusing on their contributions to economic, social, and infrastructural development in the community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of women’s cooperatives to contribute to rural development, the effectiveness of these cooperatives in Kachia Local Government Area has been limited by various challenges, including inadequate funding, limited access to training, and societal constraints on women’s full participation in economic activities. These challenges undermine the ability of women’s cooperatives to reach their full potential in fostering sustainable rural development. This study aims to evaluate the role of women’s cooperatives in rural development in Kachia and identify strategies to enhance their effectiveness in promoting economic growth and social welfare.
